SENIOR CHOIR DIRECTOR

SUMMARY: The Senior Choir Director is responsible for coordinating all activities of the adult vocal choir of Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church (MLC). The values of the person in this position must align with MLC’s mission statement: Guided by the Gospel, we welcome all to worship, make disciples, hunger for ministry, nurture youth, gather resources for growing ministries, and offer healing and care to all in need.

STATUS: Exempt, part-time (late August to mid-May approximately 5- 6 hours every other week)

REPORTING STRUCTURE: The Senior Choir Director reports to the Pastor.

EVALUATION: The Pastor, following adopted policies of MLC, evaluates the

Senior Choir Director.

STARTING PAY RANGE: to be discussed 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • A degree in choral conducting preferred
  • Two years’ experience conducting choral groups
  • Knowledge of the seasons of the church year and their significance to Lutheran worship
  • Appreciation for how choral music contributes to inspiring worship
  • Ability to identify and evaluate musical gifts of others
  • Ability to sight-read music and conduct a variety of choral musical arrangements
  • Knowledge of church and liturgical music
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Ability to establish good rapport and communication with volunteers, congregational members, and staff
  • Ability to nurture and support volunteer musicians
  • Administrative skills to manage advanced planning for worship services and rehearsals.

DESIRED SKILLS WHICH MAY INFLUENCE CONSIDERATION FOR THIS POSITION:

  • Working knowledge of computers for publicity, communications, and record-keeping purposes
  • Knowledge of current software: Sundays in& Season (online or book)
  • Ability to sing or play piano.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluate, direct, and instill teamwork among volunteer choir members with musical and spiritual leadership
  • Select a variety of musical arrangements to compliment the time of the church year, themed Sundays, Lent, Holy Week, or other special worship emphases, as determined through advanced planning by the Worship and Music Coordinator through advanced and long ranged planning
  • Oversee adult vocal choir publicity such as brochures, Spirit, the Messenger, and social media
  • Determine budgetary needs for adult choral ministries and coordinate expenditures with the Worship and Music Coordinator
  • Notify the Worship and Music Coordinator in advance when unable to conduct a scheduled worship service so that a substitute may be found

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Conduct weekly rehearsals
  • Attend the entire worship service where the choir will be singing and direct the choir
  • Plan rehearsals to ensure that the choir is efficient, productive, and spiritual
  • Develop and implement a plan to recruit congregational members to the adult vocal choir
  • Recruit and direct accompanists or instrumentalists for combined musical arrangements
  • Attend Worship and Music Committee meetings
  • Attend staff meetings when scheduled.

SUMMARY: Messiah Lutheran Church desires to add a Youth Minister (Leader) to its ministry team whose personal values are in alignment with its mission statement, which is: Called by the Gospel, we welcome all to worship, make disciples, hunger for ministry, nurture youth, provide resources for growing ministries, and offer healing and care to all in need. This leadership position will oversee all aspects of the congregation’s youth ministry and work to ensure that faith formation opportunities are made available to all ages through a variety of ministry opportunities and programming.

STATUS: Non-exempt, Part-Time

REPORTS TO: Pastor

WAGE: To be discussed

SUPERVISES: Paid staff and ministry volunteers with responsibilities in youth ministry.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Youth Ministry or Christian Education with emphasis on Youth Ministry or an equivalent level of education with training in Youth and Ministry preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Desired: Two years of experience in youth ministry.

REQUIRED: The youth minister has a major role working with families in the faith development of children and youth within and outside Messiah as a leader and an example in accordance with Messiah’s Mission Statement.

This person will have:

  • A true calling and passion for Youth Ministry and its role in faith formation and personal development.
  • A strong Christian faith within the Lutheran liturgical tradition and or a good understanding of the 21stcentury Christian Education trends and practices with the ability to convey those beliefs to children and youth.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills to develop, implement and oversee a variety of events, programs, and ministries for youth and their families.
  • Proficiency with technology such as a variety of social media, computer programs, and record-keeping systems.
  • Strong communication and mentoring skills to build and nurture relationships with youth, families, ministry leaders and congregational/community members.
  • Strong presentation skills to speak before large groups.
  • Ability for self-motivation yet work collaboratively with Pastor, staff, and volunteers.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of congregational issues.
  • Stamina and physical ability to attend and/or participate in youth activities.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

YOUTH MINISTRY PROGRAMMING

  • Work with families to continue established youth programs.
  • Become aware of and support Christian educational opportunities for youth, including:

o Youth Groups, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Bible Study,

o Mission Trips, Summer Camps, Youth Gatherings, Outreach Ministries, and

o Assist with other family activities and fundraising events.

  • Maintain timely ongoing communication with youth, families, and congregational members.
  • Oversee and coordinate volunteers for:

o Youth and special family ministry events,

o Seasonal activities such as Easter Egg hunt, Trunk or Treat, Advent, Christmas or Lenten programs, and

o Bible camp

DEVELOPING AND EQUIPPING LEADERS

  • Assist in recruiting, training, and equipping volunteers, youth, and parents in all areas of the youth ministries program.
  • Specifically engage and equip youth to participate in worship, congregational activities, and programs throughout the year.
  • Build rapport and nurture relationships with youth, families, and congregational members.
  • Collaborate with Pastor to coordinate Confirmation classes and retreats.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

  • Attend staff meetings and be informed and supportive of other ongoing committees and programs.
  • Maintain database and reports on youth programming, including attendance.
  • Recommended to publish reports and updates in the “Spirit” monthly newsletter when warranted.
  • Collaborate with the Office Administrator in organizing, printing, and ordering necessary materials for activities or programs.
  • Maintain Youth Ministry office, equipment, and materials.
  • Manage the budget for the Youth Ministry program.
  • Complete annual Child Safety Training.
  • Attend Messiah Lighthouse Child and Family Development Advisory Board meetings.
  • All other duties as needed.
